Using the REL S/850
Purpose
- If you want more weight in the lowest notes and a greater sense of scale from familiar music, S/850 combines a 12-inch active driver and 850 W amplifier in a wider, deeper cabinet than S/550. Separate music and LFE inputs also allow the same subwoofer to serve film playback.

Connections and system matching
Check the inputs and outputs against the equipment you already use. If you have a connection question, send us the model names or a photograph of the sockets.
Connecting and setting up
- High Level takes a signal from a compatible amplifier’s speaker terminals. Alternatively, connect a volume-controlled preamplifier output to the RCA Low Level input.
- An AV receiver or processor’s subwoofer output connects to the dedicated RCA or XLR .1/LFE input. This has separate level adjustment from the music input.
- Use High Level or Low Level, not both together. For High Level, follow the instructions for your exact amplifier, including any Class D, balanced, bridged or monoblock requirements.
Points to consider
- The quoted low-frequency extension is a manufacturer specification. Bass level and decay at your seat also depend on placement and the room.
INSTALLATION
Placement and installation
- Using the High Level connector adds 44.5 mm to the cabinet depth. Also leave the ventilation and access space specified in the manual, keeping the area below the passive radiator clear. Try practical positions before adjusting phase, crossover and level.
- A vertical Line Array requires matching REL S/850 units, the specified REL hardware and professional planning for support, spacing and installation.

What changes between S/550 and S/850?+
S/850 has a 12-inch active driver and 850 W amplifier in a wider, deeper cabinet; S/550 uses a 10-inch active driver and 550 W amplifier in a smaller cabinet. Both list the same 19 Hz manufacturer-rated extension at -6 dB in room. Cabinet space and the way you listen matter alongside those design differences.
Why consider a subwoofer when my main speakers already sound good?+
You may still want more weight in the lowest notes or a greater sense of scale. A subwoofer adds a bass source that can be positioned and adjusted with the main speakers. The useful test is whether it brings the change you want at your normal listening level.
What does the Australian price for REL S/850 cover?+
$7,799 is the price for one subwoofer, including GST, with a 3-year standard Australian warranty. Any optional accessories and delivery timing will be listed in your quotation. These warranty terms do not limit statutory consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law.
