Twin 15.5 cm woofers and a dedicated beryllium tweeter in a slim, 2.5-way floorstander. TAD E2 offers a different route into the Evolution range, using a waveguide tweeter rather than a CST coaxial assembly.

LISTENING & DESIGN

What makes E2 distinctive?

Evolution Two is worth considering when you want a floorstanding pair with integrated support and a comparatively narrow cabinet. Its two woofers share bass duties, while the upper driver continues into the midrange. That is the practical distinction behind the 2.5-way description.

A dedicated tweeter and waveguide

The 25 mm beryllium tweeter sits in a rigid cast-aluminium waveguide. TAD uses the waveguide to shape dispersion and manage the transition to the upper woofer. E2 does not use the concentric midrange/tweeter found in ME1TX, E1AX or GE1.

Two woofers with different upper limits

Both 15.5 cm MACC drivers contribute in the bass. The lower driver rolls off earlier, with crossover points specified at 90 Hz and 2.8 kHz. It is a way to add bass radiating area without adding a separate midrange driver.

A port integrated into the base

The bottom port opens forwards and backwards. Internal bracing and carefully positioned absorbent material address enclosure resonance, while a steel base supports the port structure. The arrangement directs port airflow along the base of the cabinet.

How it compares

E2 uses a 2.5-way arrangement and is rated at 32 kg per speaker. E1AX adds a dedicated CST midrange/tweeter, uses two 16 cm woofers and weighs 54 kg. E2’s nominal impedance is 6 Ω, compared with E1AX’s 4 Ω; both still require appropriate external amplification.

Amplification, support and placement

Use an integrated amplifier or power amplifier, with speaker cable to the rear terminals. The nominal load is 6 Ω and the specified minimum is 4.5 Ω; discuss the amplifier’s real load capability as well as its wattage.

The cabinet is 1,085 mm high without spikes and 1,113 mm with spikes. Allow for the 320 × 405 mm footprint, stable support and access to the rear connections.

Positioning the pair

A bottom port still interacts with the room. Keep its front and rear exits clear, and compare several distances from the wall with music you know. Use the supplied support hardware as directed in the manual rather than resting the cabinet on improvised feet.

Questions about E2

Does E2 use TAD’s CST driver?

No. E2 uses a separate 25 mm beryllium tweeter in a waveguide, plus two 15.5 cm woofers. Its 2.5-way layout is different from the three-way CST models.

Does E2 need speaker stands?

No. It is a floorstanding speaker with a base and supplied support accessories. Follow the manual when fitting and levelling the supports.

What does the 30 Hz specification tell me?

It is the lower end of TAD’s published frequency-response range. It does not specify bass level, decay or uniformity at your listening seat. Placement and the room remain part of the system.
