Using the REL Carbon Special Black Label
Purpose
- For listeners seeking a fuller bass foundation without replacing their main speakers, Carbon Special Black Label offers a 12-inch all-carbon-fibre active driver in a piano-black cabinet. This driver construction differs from the CarbonAlloy design in S/850. Its music and dedicated LFE inputs allow it to serve a stereo system, film playback, or both.

Check the inputs and outputs against the equipment you already use. If you have a connection question, send us the model names or a photograph of the sockets.
Connecting and setting up
- High Level takes a signal from a compatible amplifier’s speaker terminals. Alternatively, connect a volume-controlled preamplifier output to the RCA Low Level input.
- An AV receiver or processor’s subwoofer output connects to the dedicated RCA or XLR .1/LFE input. This has separate level adjustment from the music input.
- Use High Level or Low Level, not both together. For High Level, follow the instructions for your exact amplifier, including any Class D, balanced, bridged or monoblock requirements.
Points to consider
- The quoted low-frequency extension is a manufacturer specification. Bass level and decay at your seat also depend on placement and the room.
INSTALLATION
Placement and installation
- Leave clearance below the passive radiator, around the cabinet for ventilation and behind it for connections. Try practical positions before adjusting phase, crossover and level.
- A vertical Line Array requires matching REL Carbon Special Black Label units, the specified REL hardware and professional planning for support, spacing and installation.

Carbon Special Black Label pairs an all-carbon-fibre driver with a piano-black cabinet and an included Premium Wood Grille. S/850 uses a CarbonAlloy driver, offers black or white finishes, and has an optional wood grille. Both provide music and dedicated LFE inputs. Compare the finish, included accessories and price first, then consider the bass weight and scale you want with your own speakers at normal listening levels.
Why consider a subwoofer when my main speakers already sound good?+
You may still want more weight in the lowest notes or a greater sense of scale. A subwoofer adds a bass source that can be positioned and adjusted with the main speakers. The useful test is whether it brings the change you want at your normal listening level.
