PSI speakers, subwoofers and AVAA: what does each do?

Main speakers reproduce the programme, subwoofers extend the low frequencies and AVAA absorbs room bass energy. Choose the role before the model.

System Integration

Three different jobs: Speakers reproduce the recording, subwoofers add low-frequency reproduction, and AVAA absorbs bass energy in the room. Choose the role before comparing models.

What it plays, where it connects and what it does
Product roleWhat it playsConnectionPurpose
Active speakers →The recording’s main channelsVolume-controlled analogue output → XLR; mains powerReproduce music or dialogue
Sub A125-M / A225-M →Low frequencies in the supplied audioSuitable line output / bass management; mains powerExtend low-frequency reproduction
AVAA C214 / C225 →No music signalMains power, no audio cableAbsorb room bass energy within its operating band

A214-M is a centre speaker, not AVAA C214. Sub A225-M is a subwoofer, not AVAA C225. None of these roles guarantees a particular result in your room.

Similar product names can hide very different jobs. Sub A225-M is an active subwoofer connected to the playback system. AVAA C225 is an active absorber that works acoustically in the room, without an audio connection.

The right starting question is what you want to change. More low-frequency extension, a clearer view into recordings and shorter bass decay are different aims. One product does not automatically solve all three.

01

Main speakers reproduce the recording

A14-M through A25-M, A214-M and A215-M are active loudspeakers with built-in amplification. A23-M and A25-M use a dedicated midrange in a three-way layout; the other listed main and centre models use two-way layouts.

Select a cabinet and output capability suited to the listening distance and level you need. Larger specifications do not establish a better result in every room, and a manufacturer's peak SPL figure is not continuous output at your seat.

02

A subwoofer adds a low-frequency sound source

Sub A125-M and Sub A225-M reproduce the bass content of a supplied audio signal. A225-M offers a larger dual-driver enclosure; A125-M is the more compact option. Both need a suitable signal route and coordinated settings.

Adding output can also change how the system excites room resonances. Check level, crossover, polarity or phase where the system permits, and placement. A deep cancellation dip should be investigated before trying to fill it with more output.

03

AVAA absorbs acoustic energy

AVAA C214 and C225 operate independently of the music signal path. They absorb low-frequency energy in their operating bands. They do not supply a soundtrack's LFE channel or extend the bass response by reproducing missing notes.

C214 operates from 15 to 160 Hz; C225 from 12 to 130 Hz, with higher operating sound-pressure capacity. Those are operating specifications, not guaranteed reductions in decibels. Model, quantity and position need to follow the actual room problem.

04

EQ and absorption act in different places

EQ changes the electrical playback signal. Passive and active absorption work on sound energy in the room. They can complement each other, but owning a room-correction processor neither proves nor rules out a need for absorption.

Compare response and decay with the same source, listening positions and level. A change in loudness or seat can make a comparison misleading. Factory loudspeaker calibration does not replace these room checks.

05

Start with what you hear

For limited extension, examine the main speakers and the case for a properly integrated subwoofer. For lingering bass, investigate decay and possible absorption. For uneven bass across seats, investigate placement and interaction between sources and the room before selecting equipment.

Our C214 measured case documents one room under stated conditions. It is useful evidence of that comparison, not a forecast for another room. Supply, audition and measurement arrangements are confirmed individually.
