Using the Cascade DAC
Purpose
- Select between digital and line-level analogue sources, then control the listening volume at the DAC.
- Digital processing, analogue conversion and the converter’s power supply each have their own chassis.
Connections
- Connect digital sources to the Director and a line-level source, such as a phono stage, to the converter.
- The balanced XLR output can drive a suitable power amplifier using Cascade’s volume control.
Key differences
- Compared with Palisade, Cascade adds analogue inputs, eight conversion modules and a separate Powerbase.
- You can keep an analogue source in the same system without adding a separate preamplifier solely for input switching.

Eight modules provide sixteen internal conversion channels that work together to produce the left and right stereo outputs.

Balanced XLR and RCA line inputs let sources such as a phono stage share Cascade’s source selection and volume control with digital playback.

Connecting and setting up
- Place the Director, converter and Powerbase with room for their interconnecting cables and ventilation.
- Use the analogue inputs for line-level signals. A turntable cartridge needs a phono stage first.
Points to consider
- Three chassis and their cables take more rack space than the two-chassis Palisade.
- The XLR output feeds an amplifier or preamplifier, not passive loudspeakers directly.
