What can Trinnov Optimizer improve?

Some bass notes stand out, others fade away, and the subwoofer can seem separate from the music. Here is how Optimizer uses measurements to improve tonal balance, timing and the way your speakers work together.

Trinnov Amethyst: silver front panel
Amethyst is a stereo preamplifier with Optimizer, for adjusting the speakers and subwoofers in a music system.

A good pair of speakers can sound balanced in one room and bass-heavy in another. The walls, speaker positions and listening seat all change what reaches your ears. Adding a subwoofer brings another sound source into that same room, with its own response and timing.

Trinnov Optimizer measures those speakers in your room, then calculates adjustments to their frequency response, level and timing. It can help make the tonal balance more even and the handover to a subwoofer more natural. Understanding those adjustments also makes it easier to see where a change of position or acoustic treatment will help.

01

Why the same speakers sound different in another room

At the listening seat, you hear sound arriving directly from the speakers together with reflections from the room. The balance between them changes with frequency and position. In the bass, room resonances can make some notes much stronger than others, so a bass line that was recorded evenly may sound uneven in your room.

Moving a speaker or the seat changes these relationships, even though the equipment is unchanged. Optimizer measures the response at the positions where you actually listen, giving the calibration a starting point that reflects the room as well as the speaker.

02

Frequency response: why some notes dominate

Frequency response describes how strongly the system reproduces different frequencies at a given position. A broad rise in the bass can make the balance heavy; a prominent narrow band can make particular notes stand out. Optimizer uses the measured response to calculate filters that bring it closer to a chosen target curve.

That target curve sets the tonal balance you are aiming for. It can include a gentle bass lift rather than demanding a ruler-flat result. The amount of correction is chosen with the speaker's output capability in mind, so the system keeps the headroom it needs for musical peaks.

03

Timing and phase: helping speakers and subs work together

Around the crossover, the main speakers and subwoofer reproduce some of the same frequencies. How those sound waves line up at your seat determines whether they reinforce or partly cancel one another. A timing or phase mismatch can leave that part of the bass weak, uneven or too prominent.

Optimizer measures the speakers separately so their level, delay and phase response can be considered together. Adjusting those relationships helps the bass join the main speakers more smoothly. The aim is for a note to retain its shape and balance as it moves through the crossover region.

04

What happens during an Optimizer calibration?

The system plays test signals through the speakers while the measurement microphone records what reaches the listening positions. Trinnov's 3D microphone also captures information about the direction of the sound sources. The microphone and cable must suit the processor, and measurements can include the other seats you want the calibration to consider.

Optimizer calculates filters from those measurements and the chosen target. The calibration can then be refined by adjusting the target curve, correction range and alignment. Listening and follow-up measurements show how those choices affect the system, making the next adjustment more informed.

  2. 2. AdjustAdjust tonal balance and the timing between speakers
  3. 3. Listen and checkHear what changed, then use measurements to understand why

This diagram follows the calibration process. Listening and measurement work together: one reveals the experience, the other helps explain it.

05

Where placement and room treatment still matter

A deep dip caused by cancellation deserves a closer look at the speaker and seat positions. Simply adding more signal at that frequency may use up amplifier and driver headroom while much of the sound still cancels. Moving the source or listener changes the acoustic relationship itself; suitable treatment can also reduce unwanted reflected energy.

Optimizer addresses the measured frequency and timing behaviour of the system. WaveForming adds another way to control low-frequency resonances and decay, using a suitable Altitude processor and subwoofer arrangement. The WaveForming guide explains how that works, including the two-front-subwoofer option. Amethyst provides Optimizer and bass management, but does not support WaveForming.

06

Comparing the result and choosing a processor

Use familiar music at comparable listening levels and switch between the original and adjusted settings. Listen for the problem that brought you to the calibration: uneven bass notes, a heavy tonal balance or an obvious handover to the subwoofer. Response measurements help explain the change; checking nearby seats shows how far it extends.

For stereo systems, Amethyst offers four processed outputs for 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 or a suitable two-way active arrangement. The Altitude range provides more output channels for larger systems. The practical choice depends on how many speakers and subs need separate processing, and whether your amplifiers or active speakers take analogue or digital inputs.
